Cluster Pays

A payline-free slot mechanic where wins are triggered by clusters of 5+ adjacent matching symbols on a grid.

Instead of fixed paylines, wins are triggered when 5+ matching symbols form an adjacent cluster (touching horizontally or vertically). Symbols are arranged on a grid — typically 6x5 or 7x7 — rather than the traditional 5x3 layout.

After a cluster wins:

The cluster is removed from the grid.
New symbols drop from above (cascading reels).
New clusters can chain, extending the win event.

NetEnt’s Aloha! Cluster Pays (2016) and Reactoonz (2017) popularised the mechanic. Play’n GO, Pragmatic Play (Sweet Bonanza, Gates of Olympus), and Push Gaming (Jammin’ Jars) now ship cluster titles regularly.

Cluster mechanics have less per-spin variance than payline slots because each cascade is a separate win event. Long sessions tend to converge on stated RTP faster — a good pick for bonus-clearing at 96%+ RTP.
