Cascading Reels
A slot mechanic where winning symbols disappear and new symbols drop into the empty positions from above, potentially triggering chain wins.

Cascading reels replace the traditional “spin and stop” with a drop-fall animation: when a winning combination lands, the winning symbols are removed and new symbols cascade down from above to fill the empty positions. If the new symbols form another winning combination, that also pays — and the cycle repeats.
NetEnt’s Gonzo’s Quest (2011) established the mechanic in modern online slots. It’s now nearly universal on cluster slots and common on 5-reel paylines too.
Practical implications:
- Multiple wins per spin. A single bet can produce a chain of 2-10+ cascades.
- Lower per-spin variance. Because each cascade is a separate win event, per-spin variance is lower than headline volatility suggests.
- Multiplier stacking. Many cascading slots add a progressive multiplier that grows with each cascade — long cascades are where the big wins come from.
