Cascading Reels
Symbols drop-fall after wins, enabling chain reactions. Standard on cluster slots but also on payline titles.
How Cascading Reels works
When a winning combination lands, the winning symbols disappear and new symbols cascade down from above to fill the empty positions. This creates a second spin without an additional bet — and potentially chains further. NetEnt's Gonzo's Quest (2011) established the mechanic. Now nearly universal on modern grid slots and common on 5-reel paylines too. Also called "avalanche," "tumbling," or "drop-and-fill."
How to play Cascading Reels slots
Cascading multiplies the effective spin count per bet, so per-spin variance is lower than headline volatility suggests. Cascades often stack a multiplier that resets after the win chain ends — long cascades are where big wins come from.
