Scatter symbol
A special slot symbol that pays regardless of paylines and typically triggers bonus features.
Also known as: scatter
Symbols that pay based on the number appearing anywhere on the reels, not their position on paylines. Three or more scatters on a spin almost always trigger a bonus round — most commonly free spins.
Some slots use themed images for scatters (e.g. a Book of Ra icon in Novomatic’s Book of Ra series). Others use a plain “SCATTER” label.
Because scatters bypass paylines, they add a stream of variance to the game distinct from the main payline math.
